This intensive 3-day program is designed to provide researchers, program administrators, and businesses with a strategic roadmap for acquiring government contracts and grants. Particular attention will be paid on insight into the bid and grant process, development and writing of proposals and bids, and identifying opportunities. Participants will be led through a nine-part course of the government contracts and grants process step-by-step. Each will leave with a specific roadmap and expertise into successful government funding acquisition.  Rather than a generic program, The Grant Foundation Center’s Contracts, Bids, and Federal Grant Proposal Writing Workshop is a 3-day, thorough examination of the government funding acquisition process.

Topic sessions include:

1. The Bid & Proposal Process: Developing Proposals that Win

This course demystifies the proposal process for government Request For Proposals (RFPs). The emphasis on understanding the government’s requirements will show you how to prepare your responses accordingly and strategically to give your proposal the competitive edge. You will learn where to locate government requirements, how to get started in preparing your response, what should be included in your Technical Proposal, and pre-proposal planning activities.

2. Cutting the Red Tape and Getting Government Contracts

The United States Federal Government is the largest purchaser of goods and services in the entire world. However, organizations that are unfamiliar with the procedures find it very overwhelming. The administrative requirements are manageable, but procedures need to be created. This section will take you from assessing which government market is a key target for your business to developing proposals to win long term contracts.

3. Planning & Marketing Your GSA Schedule

In order to sell to the Federal Government, your organization needs to develop and sell your GSA Schedule. Most people are not familiar with the GSA Schedule Process and the numerous opportunities available. Currently, there are 17,495 GSA contracts in place. Approximately $33.8 billion worth of sales were recorded through the GSA Schedule Program in the last fiscal year. Marketing your GSA Schedule is the key to success. This session answers questions of why a GSA Schedule is important, what level of investment you should expect and the overall process of obtaining a GSA Schedule. In addition, it will review the marketing steps that include distributing your price list, strategically maximizing your web presence, and developing GSA marketing partnerships.

4. Government Rules and Regulations Made Simple

The course will introduce you to the organization of the FAR and its 53 parts, explain frequently used government acronyms and contracting terminology, provide the basics of contract law, highlight the risks and rewards associated with the different types of government contracts. Above all, the intent is to present a clear overview of the federal acquisition process; clarify the layout of the FAR, its key laws and regulations; and familiarize participants with the primary responsibilities imposed on federal contractors and potential contractors. With the completion of this session, you will have a solid roadmap for your organizational development and business structure planning.

5. The Compliance Requirements

The final step towards securing government contracts is regulatory compliance. Government compliance dictates human resources policies and procedures, as well as financial and management guidelines that are imposed by the DCAA. This course will address each of these aspects to provide your organization with a working knowledge of these requirements, while providing additional resources where information may be obtained. Moreover, it will enable you to complete Representations and Certifications documents with the confidence that the bid meets the regulations for your procurement submission.

6. Professional Grant Proposal Writing

Designed for both the novice and experienced grant writer, this course will make each student an overall proposal writing specialist. In addition to teaching the basic components of a grant proposal, successful approaches, and the do’s and don’ts of grant writing, this course is infused with expert principles that will lead to a mastery of the process. Strategy resides at the forefront of this course’s intent to illustrate grant writing as an integrated, multidimensional, and dynamic endeavor. Each student will learn to stop writing the grant and to start writing the story. Ultimately, this class will illustrate how each component of the grant proposal represents an opportunity to use proven techniques for generating support.

7. Strategic Government Grant Research

At its foundation, this course will address the basics of foundation, corporation, and government grant research. However, this course will teach a strategic funding research approach that encourages students to see research not as something they do before they write a proposal, but as an integrated part of the grant seeking process. Students will be exposed to online and database research tools, as well as publications and directories that contain information about foundation, corporation, and government grant opportunities. Focusing on funding sources and basic social science research, this course teaches students how to use research as part of a strategic grant acquisition effort.

8. Program and Project Planning

This course is centered on the belief that “it’s all about the program.” This intensive course will teach professional program development essentials and program evaluation. While most grant writing “workshops” treat program development and evaluation as separate from the writing of a proposal, this class will teach students the relationship between overall program planning and grant writing.

9 Strategic Communication Strategies

This course will provide students with an arsenal of advanced persuasion and argumentation techniques.  Centered around expert communication principles, this class will change the way students conceptualize grant proposals and other fundraising tools.  Students will leave this course with masterful methods and will be more than just confident grantwriters, but communication specialists.  This course is grounded on the idea that fundraising and nonprofit development represent profound communication activity.
