Ventanan tutkimuksen mukaan Hot Vendor -luokituksen ansaitsevat yritykset parhaiten edustavat ostajalle syntyvää arvoa. Tutkimus perustuu perusteelliseen arviointiin ja yrityksen ja sen tuotteiden tarkastukseen ja pohjautuvat tutkittuihin ja tarkistettuihin faktoihin.

The Ventana Research Value Index for Business Intelligence in 2009 on puolueeton opas, joka pohjautuu yli vuosikymmenen analyyseihin teknologiatoimittajien tuotteista. Value Index perustuu kaikkien vertikaalien ja kaiken kokoisiin organisaatioiden tutkimuksiin, ja arvioi teknologioita, joita yritys ja sen IT voivat käyttää BI-toiminnassa. Arvio jaetaan seitsemään luokkaan: sopeutumiskyky, hallittavuus, luotettavuus, käytettävyys, toimivuus, kokonaiskustannukset (TCO) ja sijoitetun pääoman tuotto (ROI).
Tutkimus tehtiin marraskuun 2008 ja huhtikuun 2009 välisenä aikana; arvioidut tuotteet ovat olleet yleisesti saatavilla tammikuun alussa 2009. Käytetty menetelmä arvioi tuotteen toiminnot, soveltuvuuden tehtävään ja myyjän tuen tehokkuuden osto- ja asiakkaan vakuuttamis-prosessissa.
Value Indexin avulla yritykset voivat helpottaa yrityksen nykyisten ja tulevien BI tekniikoiden, järjestelmien ja liiketoiminnan sekä IT:n työkalujen arviointia. Value Index esittää arvion toimittajan tarjonnasta, eli tuotteista, palveluista ja asiaan liittyvistä näkökohdista. Arviossa käytetään sekä selkeää ja helppotajuista graafista esittämistapaa, että tarkkaa numeerista indeksitietoa.
