Jun 28, 2009 – ’ The show serves a major meeting place for the many entities in the global high-end jewelry and diamond industries.
Yancy Weinrich, Industry VP for JCK and Luxury, says that the trade show’s venue is a definite attraction: “If we were to have the show in Chicago or some other US city other than Vegas, there would definitely be fewer participants.”
This year 2,500 high-end jewelry and diamond exhibitors from 22 countries will display their merchandise at the trade show scheduled for May 31 to June 2. The expected number of visitors will be between 15,000 and 17,000.
The general economic meltdown has definitely impacted on the trade show. Weinrich states: “We lost about 400 jewelry companies this year. But this gave us the opportunity to expand booths and provide more desirable locations to some of the participants, including the IDI pavilion. The core of the show is healthy.”
Special incentives were offered in order to attract new participants. Yancy elaborates: “This year we introduced the VIP Buyer Program. We succeeded in bringing in 440 new stores by offering them free hotel rooms or $1000 in merchandise credits for use at the exhibits or on the floor. We also offered other perks like a VIP lounge and a VIP taxi line.”
She adds: “Some of these efforts were internationally based. We succeeded in attracting 25 high-end Russian jewelry stores thanks to incentives like free hotel accommodations, translation services and private tours of the floor.”
Traditionally, JCK Las Vegas is regarded as an indicator of how sales will fare during the holiday season. We asked Weinrich what she foresees. She replies: “I don’t have a crystal ball. Nevertheless, I don’t see the jewelry industry pulling out of the recession before 2010. Also, stores are currently holding a lot of inventory, but they still need to work with their partners and preferred vendors to strengthen relationships and select new products from their lines. JCK Las Vegas will be an indicator of how buying goes for the rest of 2010.”
Regarding the JCK Las Vegas show in 2010, Weinrich notes that there will be no change in venue. When it comes to booth placements, the organizers are always looking for ways to make navigation easier, so 2010 will be no exception.
From a more personal point of view, Ms. Weinrich serves as President of the Women’s Jewelry Association (WJA). The organization was founded 25 years ago to promote women in their careers in the fine jewelry industry.
The organization has 13 chapters all over the United States and a newly-opened chapter in India.
“The WJA’s objective is to encourage networking and boost women’s careers in the industry,” explains Weinrich. “We hold national conferences called ‘Women in the Know.’ Among others, WJA will honor Diane Von Furstenburg this year for the fine jewelry line that she designed for H. Stern.”
